Designs have been released for the new Moreland and Coburg Stations, taking the two stations one step closer to construction. The stations are part of the Bell to Moreland level crossing removal project that will see four dangerous and congested level crossing removed along the Upfield Line.
“Not only are we making sure this dangerous and congested level crossing is gone for good - we’re delivering modern, safe and accessible stations with more open space for locals to enjoy,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.
The new stations are designed to preserve and integrate the existing heritage station buildings, and will feature:
- Upgraded, modern facilities including waiting rooms
- Improved cycling facilities and better walking and cycling paths linking trams and buses
- Lifts and stairs making getting around easier for everyone
- Landscaped civic plazas featuring trees, gardens and more seating
The Level Crossing Removal Project is working with architecture firm Wood Marsh to develop the design for the Moreland and Coburg Stations.
Approximately 1,000 people will be working around the clock during a three-month construction blitz next year to complete the project.
“Getting rid of these level crossing not only makes this community safer but supports local jobs in our northern suburbs,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said.
During the construction blitz, the Anstey turnback facility will allow trains to run between Anstey and the city.
Community feedback is currently being sought after for the Moreland and Coburg Station precincts. Locals are encouraged to visit and drop their comments at Your Level Crossing.
“As we build the new stations, the community have a great opportunity to help shape the open space and areas around the stations - so I encourage all locals to get online and have their say,” Member for Pascoe Vale Lizzie Blandthorn said.
Construction is anticipated to begin later this year, with the four level crossings permanently gone and the stations operational by 2021.
