The contract has been signed and an alliance between Laing O’Rourke, Fulton Hogan and Jacobs will be delivering works for the removal of the dangerous and congested level crossing on Lower Plenty Road in Victoria.
“Level crossing and sections of single track are relics of the past. They don’t belong on a modern train network and we’re removing them, to reduce road congestion and run more trains.
“The contract is signed and work will start in the coming months – after years of excuses, we’re getting it done,” said Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan.
As part of this project, the Victorian Government is planning to build a rail bridge over Lower Plenty Road which will remove the crossing and, in turn, will reduce congestion as well as improve access to the shops and parklands.
The new rail bridge will also protect train services from any disruptions caused by flooding and save hundreds of local trees as well – compared to the rail trench option.
This design is a result of extensive engineering, planning and community engagement which has helped in finding the best way to separate trains from traffic.
Construction of a brand new Rosanna Station next to the crossing is also included in the works package as well as the duplication of a single section of track between Heidelberg and Rosanna.
The second track is going to be built east of the existing track together with a new tunnel under Darebin Street – next to the existing brick tunnel.
This project is part of the $395 million package of works which includes the Grange Road level crossing removal in Alphington.
“This huge project will make Rosanna a better place to live – with more trains, less congestion and better access to the shops and parklands in our neighbourhood,” said Member for Ivanhoe Anthony Carbines.
Construction is expected to begin in the coming months, with completion set for 2019.
