Work begins on $2bn High Capacity Metro Train project in VIC

Preparation works has begun on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line in Victoria for 65 new High-Capacity Metro Trains (HCMTs) that’s going to be built in the State.

On her announcement, Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan has highlighted approximately $660 million worth of upgrades to be carried out along the entire length of Melbourne’s busiest train line as well as on the entry to Metro Tunnel.

“We’re building Melbourne’s first high capacity train line and creating thousands of new construction jobs.

“Bigger trains, better stations, and no level crossing will get tens of thousands of people in Melbourne’s south east home safer and sooner every day,” said Premier Daniel Andrews.

This project will involve upgrading power and signalling between the City Loop, Pakenham and Cranbourne.

13 existing stations will be upgraded to feature longer platforms and five new stations – delivered through the $1.6 billion Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project – will be built to have longer platforms to cater to HCMTs.

“We’re getting rid of the congested level crossings and out-dated signalling that is holding our train system back,” Ms Allan said.

The project will also involve rebuilding over 70-kilometres of overhead power lines; construction or upgrading of 20 substations; and duplication of a section of track in South Dandenong in order to boost the reliability of the line as well as support more services.

Construction of a large depot in Pakenham East is included in the project plan and it will feature a maintenance facility, train simulators and stabling for about 30 trains. This part of the project will be supporting 100 new ongoing local jobs.

The entire HCMT project will be creating approximately 1,100 local jobs, with skills and opportunities to open for about 150 apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets.

The first High-Capacity Metro Train is expected to be delivered and tested by late 2018 and ready to begin its service in 2019. All 65 trains are expected to be ready for the opening of the Metro Tunnel in 2016.
